Favela
Yesterday, I went on a tour in two of Rios approximately 600 shantytowns, also known as "favelas". If you have seen the film City of God, you will know what I'm talking about. It wasn't as scary though, actually the tour showed a community that worked very well. The most striking difference is that drug dealers with big shiny guns - and not the police - are the law there. Approximately 5 million people live in the favelas, which are all still without running water and sewage. All houses are self made and often built on top of one another because of lack of space. The favelas of Rio is the place where some of the world's best football players, Romario, Ronaldo and Pelé to name a few, grew up. See the photo coverage here.
