Nyrup Rasmussen and the 2001 election
Yesterday, I met former prime minister Poul Nyrup Rasmussen. The meeting was a part of a field trip with Medievidenskabelig Forening about political communication.
We discussed the communicaton strategies of the 2001 election, where Rasmussen and his social democrats lost government to the right wing parties Venstre and Konservative.
He had three main conclusions:
• The right wing succeeded in making a connection between September 11th. and the immigration from the Middle East to Denmark.
• The Social Democrats had a fifty page paper with their 100 key issues. Venstre had a half page with their five key issues. The former was too complex to get through to the public; the latter wasn't.
• Venstre were very aware of the public opinion, making focus groups twice a week and additionally making frequent opinion polls. Through this strategy, they were able to stay in the main stream, maximizing their amount of votes.
Interesting. :-)
