The end of the OS 9 adventure

Only a week ago I announced that I had made the shift from Mac OS X back to OS 9.
Now, I've just reinstalled X, and I must say that OS 9 wasn't as good as I remembered.
• First, the system is very responsive - if it responds at all. Under X, you (almost) always get into contact with your application, even though it may work slowly if the computer i busy. X just has better multitasking.
• Second: The applications aren't that much faster. I used Internet Explorer, which I found far better than Mozilla, Netscape and Opera, but it was (subjectively) only slightly faster than IE for X.
• Third: I desperately miss shortcuts such as Cmd-H for hiding the app and Cmd-M for minimizing it (window shading sucks, imho). I miss the dock - the control strip plus HandyMan does some of the same things, but it lacks some of the dock's flexibility.
• Fourth: I miss the beauty of OS X. I liked the look of 9 for the first couple of days, but I guess that was more of nostalgia than it was because it pleased my sense of aesthetics. It's strange, but to me it really is an important part of the enjoyment of working with the computer.
• Fifth (and this was what made me move back to X again): The computer had been relatively stable, with maybe one crash each day. When I tried to install Virtual PC, it froze, and I had to reboot it - the hard way. This gave me the flashing Unhappy Mac/question mark, meaning that no start disk was found. I booted from the OS 9 boot disk and got the message "The drive is unreadable. Do you want to format it?" That pissed me off. So I gave it a Disk First Aid and installed OS X again.

Gravity Life
Just came back from a concert at Rust in Copenhagen with my friend Asger's band Gravity Life. Their show was great, and... those guys just deserve a good break!
Download their latest video or get a couple of mp3s at Viatone.

Palm pain
I bought my first Palm three weeks ago. It was great, but the battery wouldn't recharge. Two days ago I got a new as replacement, and guess what? It won't even turn on! :-( Now I'm considering whether I should give it yet another try or just get the money back.
